Pastor Mark Quick
Life’s difficult circumstances are sure to provoke questions even in the heart of the most faithful Christian. True peace, however, will reside in the heart of one who owns his portion of responsibility and allows God to own his.
“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law,” [Deuteronomy 29:29].
What had been “revealed” to the Israelites? They had LAW from God to obey, PROMISES from God to act upon, WARNINGS from God to be feared, and the HISTORY of God’s dealings to inform them. This body of information formed the things revealed, and thus the things for which they were responsible to know and walk in.
I hold in my possession the written Word of God, the Bible. It’s my job to study it and apply it. I have my own personal experiences with God to inform me and I have the ministry of the Holy Spirit – which I may cultivate or neglect by my dedication to prayer.
Paul said, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow,” [1 Corinthians 3:6]. My part is to sow. God’s part is the miracle of growth and timing.
On my side of the equation is the responsibility to obey what has been revealed. On God’s side of the equation is the “Why?” and “When?” and “How?” Those are the secret things that belong to him, and with which I must trust him.
